The Story

In the Grand Jubilee Year, by regal decree, there caused to be built a great fleet with which emissaries were to go forth and to take measure of the world, to identify all manner of Beasts, be they fish or salamander, as well as the profusion of Plants and Flowers that may exist.  It was further decreed that these vessels shall fly the flag of conquest and plunder in the event there would be met both monsters and men who would not willingly bend the knee and accept our worshipful sovereign and suzerain as their master and would not cleave unto the royal word and doctrine. 

it being further decreed and certified, among many other things most profound, that a small bursary be established in provision for a limnist and scribe who would keep an accurate record of all that transpired in the course of The Voyage of Discoveries and keep notebooks of Natural Philosophy, listing what had been found and how they glorified the regal grace, such notebooks to provide a history of exploits and acts of devotion and sacrifice in our liege's name, such to be designated by the duly anointed Chief Lord High Admiral of The Imperial and Most Holy Fleet.

That limnist and scribe, who although being old and having meager vision, found the slight bursary provided quite adequate as meals, laundry and a warm place to sleep were included.
